Reportedly, his biggest influences were Igor Stravinsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Aram Kachaturian, and Sergei Prokofiev. Ifukube stated that he wanted to compose music when he first heard Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" on the radio when he was 14.

Akira Ifukube is one of the greatest composers in Japan. I wish I could meet him. Unfortunately, He's dead. His music was the greatest that I've ever heard, followed by John Williams, Michiru Oshima, Shiro Sagisu and Kaoru Wada
